When you live in a community that’s adopted “Big Wild Life” as its slogan, you expect that people who live in it are going to have an attraction to the outdoors. Some people joke that part of Anchorage’s draw is that it’s close to the “Real Alaska,” but how many cities can boast that their residents can canoe, kayak, and raft in rivers and lakes, scale cliffs, climb mountains, and even kite-surf all within their city limits? And one of the best things about playing in our wild backyard was that the Anchorage Fire Department was available to help out, if our residents had an unfortunate accident. Besides putting out fires and responding to medical events, members of the Anchorage Fire Department have many specialized skills that, although are used less often, still require many hours of annual training. I should be noted that many of these programs have significant funding from federal grants and allow in house maintenance as huge cost saving measures to the city.

The Anchorage Fire Department runs 14 Engine Companies when fully staffed. Engines are smaller then Ladder Trucks and are primarily used for fire attack, water supply, and respond to emergency medical incidents. (more…)

AFD Status and Anchorage Fire Fighters are taking a moment to put the Anchorage Police Department Officer that was senselessly shot last night in our thoughts and prayers. The men and women of APD put themselves in harms way to protect the citizens of Anchorage 24 hours a day 7 days a week. As they surround and support the officer seriously injured by this act, we’re letting them know that we’re thinking of them. (more…)
